Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfer to welfare scheme beneficiaries in Jammu and Kashmir. This announcement came during his role as the Chairman of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB).
Officials confirmed the fund allocation will proceed to all Assistant Labour Commissioners, who will ensure immediate transfers into the bank accounts of registered construction workers.
According to the Labour Department, the assistance encompasses a range of vital welfare schemes aimed at supporting the workforce. These include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illness, marriage assistance, and provisions for the next of kin of deceased workers. Additionally, the schemes offer meritorious awards for the children of registered workers.
During the 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB held in July, Chief Minister Abdullah stressed the importance of adopting a broader definition of ‘construction worker’. He aims to ensure that vulnerable laborers in the unorganised sector gain access to these essential welfare services.
He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to exploring innovative policy mechanisms. This approach will enhance coverage, secure financial stability for workers, and align JKBOCWWB operations with national best practices in labour welfare. “Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated.
Amidst these welfare announcements, Chief Minister Abdullah expressed profound sorrow over a tragic bus accident that occurred early this morning in Medina, Saudi Arabia, involving Indian Umrah pilgrims.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and conveyed his prayers for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident.
Initial reports reveal that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker en route from Mecca to Medina. The collision tragically resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, leaving just one survivor with serious injuries.
