Jammu’s Path to Inclusive Development Under Omar Abdullah

In an encouraging statement today, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister and president of the National Conference, highlighted Jammu’s progress towards inclusive development under the leadership of present Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Abdullah remarked that after years of receiving only empty promises, Jammu is now moving steadily towards sustainable growth.

Addressing a delegation of the National Conference, Dr. Abdullah emphasized that the elected government’s efforts have rekindled public confidence in democratic processes. “This government has opened the corridors of power to the common people,” he asserted, acknowledging the previously accumulated public issues over the past decade due to alleged misgovernance by the BJP.

During the interaction, the delegation, comprising local leaders, expressed appreciation for the corrective measures initiated by the Omar Abdullah-led government, aiming to reverse the setbacks Jammu faced in recent years. They informed Dr. Abdullah about various long-pending public issues that need immediate attention.

The National Conference president assured the delegation that the party is aware of the hardships endured by the people under recent undemocratic governance. Dr. Abdullah underscored, “The government under Omar Abdullah is making rapid strides to restore people’s faith in democratic institutions.”

A notable point of discussion was the much-publicized Smart City project. Abdullah criticized the recent waterlogging incidents, indicating that they exposed the inadequate planning behind the initiative. His comments reflected growing public concerns about the project’s actual benefits.

In relation to developmental initiatives, Dr. Farooq Abdullah pointed out significant measures taken by the current government. He cited efforts to restore the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which had fallen into a state of neglect. Additionally, he highlighted free transport facilities introduced for women, which have improved mobility across Jammu, and increased ration quotas aimed at easing the financial burdens on poorer families.

The restoration of the Darbar Move has also stimulated economic activity, providing much-needed relief to traders. Abdullah assured the public that ongoing and upcoming projects, like ropeways, riverside development, and the creation of lakes in Jammu city, aim to position Jammu prominently on the national tourism map.

As Jammu prepares for upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections, Dr. Abdullah urged party workers to strengthen public outreach and ensure special representation for youth and women. This focus intends to align governance with the aspirations of diverse community segments.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed Gujjar institutions, urging them to conduct scientific research on the effects of climate change and reservations affecting the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. He emphasized that such studies are essential to formulating effective future policies.

Speaking at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust in Jammu, on the occasion of the third death anniversary of Dr. Masud Ahmed Choudhary, a former Vice-Chancellor, Abdullah described him as a visionary educationist. “There is no dearth of talent in Gujjar institutions. Channelizing this talent into climate research will greatly benefit the community,” he remarked, also highlighting the community’s vulnerability due to its nomadic lifestyle.

Abdullah further stressed the need for strengthening educational infrastructure, including Gujjar hostels and mobile schools, while calling for thorough assessments regarding the impact of reservation policies. “We have spoken about reservation for years, but serious studies on its benefits are still lacking,” he stated, directing attention to the necessity for evidence-based policymaking.

Former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah reinforced the importance of education, urging the community to unite and prioritize educational initiatives for the secure future of upcoming generations. He concluded by reinforcing the need for a united front in advancing the cause of education.

Several ministers, MLAs, and civil society members participated in the event, reflecting the government’s commitment to engaging various stakeholders in the decision-making process to boost Jammu’s development.
