Opposition MPs, led by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday, raising serious concerns about the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya and recent police actions against student protesters.
Carrying placards that condemned the government, MPs gathered in front of Makar Dwar of Parliament. They shouted slogans like ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’ demanding accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
To symbolize the alleged misappropriation of funds, the MPs displayed donation boxes at the protest site and formed a human chain around them. Some Parliament members even placed cash inside these boxes to illustrate the donations purportedly stolen.
Priyanka Gandhi was joined by several prominent leaders, including Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav from Samajwadi Party, Sagarika Ghose from TMC, as well as RJD’s Sanjay Yadav and Manoj Jha, and RSP’s NK Premchandran. Together, they added weight to the protest’s claims.
The demonstrators stood behind a large banner that read ‘Why Amit Shah absent from Parliament?’ This gesture highlighted their call for transparency and accountability in light of the recent controversies surrounding the alleged theft of temple donations.
The opposition coalition, known as the INDIA bloc, has committed to intensifying their scrutiny of the government regarding the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple and the use of excessive force against protesting students last week.
In a strategic move, the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc convened in the office of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, to map out their next steps in addressing the urgent issues of ‘chhanda chori’ (theft of donations) and police actions.
This protest comes in the wake of rising tensions between the opposition and the ruling government, particularly over issues that resonate deeply with the electorate, such as trust in judicial inquiries and the treatment of peaceful demonstrators.
As discussions continue, both within and outside the corridors of power, the opposition aims to keep the focus on these critical issues, demanding accountability and transparency from the government.
