Hundreds of vehicles stranded as NH-44 remains shut for third day

AUG 28: With the closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway owing to damages caused by torrential rain, landslides, and shooting stones at multiple locations, hundreds of vehicles (LMV and HMV) remained stranded for the third consecutive day on Thursday.

It is learnt that the closure of 270-km-long stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which which connects Kashmir with rest of the country has caused nuisance to travellers and transporters.

Stranded people are facing hardships and have appealed to the concerned authorities to generate momentum in the restoration work so that the traffic movement can resume in the stipulated time frame.

Traffic Police posted on X, “Traffic is plying on Mughal road/SSG road as per advisory. Commuters are advised to follow lane discipline; overtaking will cause congestion.”

However, the Jammu-Srinagar NHW is closed due to damage at several places between Jakheni and Chenani. People are advised not to undertake journeys on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW till the restoration work is completed and the surface is traffic-worthy. Sinthan road is also closed.

The men and machines of the Border Roads Organisation have been pressed into action to clear the boulders and other blocks that hampered the connectivity.

Pertinent to mention, torrential rain battered parts of Jammu and Kashmir claiming 41 lives with Vaishno Mata landslide accounting for 34 persons.
