Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Katra on Thursday, where he will launch and inaugurate a series of development projects worth more than ₹46,000 crore. The visit is being viewed as a significant moment for Jammu and Kashmir’s development journey, as the projects span a wide range of sectors including infrastructure, railways, power, education, healthcare, tourism, and connectivity.
This ambitious initiative is part of the government’s broader goal of accelerating regional development, boosting employment, and integrating Jammu and Kashmir more deeply with the national growth narrative. The foundation-laying and inauguration ceremony will be attended by top government officials, ministers, and local leaders. The projects are expected to have a transformative impact on the region, especially on economic activities and public services.
A major highlight of the visit is the operationalization of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, which will significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between important religious and tourist destinations. This semi-high-speed train will enhance pilgrim travel, especially for those visiting the revered Vaishno Devi shrine. It also promises to give a fresh boost to tourism-related industries and local businesses.
In the power sector, several major electricity generation and transmission projects will be launched to improve power availability in Jammu and Kashmir. These projects will support uninterrupted supply to both rural and urban areas and are expected to make the region more energy resilient. Additionally, health infrastructure projects, including modern hospitals and medical colleges, will be inaugurated to address long-standing healthcare gaps and provide better facilities for the local population.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for new road and highway projects that will ensure better last-mile connectivity to remote areas. These projects are expected to ease transport of goods, connect rural producers to markets, and reduce logistical challenges for businesses.
Further, educational institutions including new colleges and skill development centres will be inaugurated to equip the youth of the region with the necessary tools to thrive in a competitive job market. These initiatives are in line with the government’s vision of youth empowerment and nation-building.
The announcement of these projects comes at a time when the Union government is increasingly focusing on the integration and development of Jammu and Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370. The investment of over ₹46,000 crore signals not just infrastructural development but also a strong push for socio-economic transformation in the region.
With this mega launch, Katra—a city already renowned for spiritual significance—will also emerge as a symbol of modern infrastructure and development. The projects being launched are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, provide livelihood opportunities, and create a positive multiplier effect on the economy.
As Katra prepares to welcome the Prime Minister, the atmosphere is one of anticipation and hope. The initiatives being announced are likely to play a key role in reshaping the developmental landscape of Jammu and Kashmir in the coming years.
