RAJOURI/JAMMU, June 11 — A 68-year-old retired teacher was tragically burnt to death while assisting efforts to control a forest fire in the Kalakote sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Tuesday.
The victim, Abdul Aziz of Panda Khetar village in Dalyote panchayat, had voluntarily joined a team of forest officials to help extinguish a blaze in the Garn forest, officials said.
While the fire was largely brought under control by late evening, Aziz ventured deeper into the forest to assess the situation. However, sudden wind gusts reignited the flames, trapping him. Despite rescue efforts, he died on the spot, officials confirmed.
Aziz’s charred body was later recovered and handed over to his family for final rites after the completion of legal procedures.
