Thirty-three tourists from West Bengal sustained injuries when a sleeper bus overturned on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Ramban on Wednesday. The accident occurred around noon as the bus, with registration number WB39K-2929, was travelling from Srinagar to Jammu. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle suddenly turned upside down, resulting in chaos on the busy highway.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene. Locals, in collaboration with police officers, initiated a rescue operation to assist the injured. They transported the victims to the District Hospital Ramban for medical treatment. According to hospital sources, several passengers suffered from minor to moderate injuries, but no fatalities have been reported.
The bus boasted a seating capacity of 58 passengers, yet it was carrying 55 at the time of the incident. Passengers recounted a traumatic experience as the bus flipped, and they desperately sought safety.
The Ramban Police have taken cognisance of the accident and launched an investigation to ascertain the causes behind this unfortunate event. Initial assessments indicate that speeding or possible mechanical failure may have contributed to the bus overturning.
Local officials emphasize the need for stricter regulations regarding passenger transport vehicles, especially those operating on hilly terrains. Many tourists travel through this popular route, and authorities must ensure their safety. District Commissioner remarked, “We are taking steps to improve road safety and prevent such incidents in the future.” This tragedy serves as a reminder of the urgent need for road safety measures on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, known for its scenic beauty, also poses significant risks due to steep gradients and sharp turns. The road has seen multiple accidents in recent years, with tourists often falling victim to these mishaps.
This incident has raised public concern and calls for greater vigilance among transport operators. Travelers, now more than ever, must exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols while embarking on their journeys.
