In the wake of recent clashes in Ladakh that resulted in four fatalities and 90 injuries, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta convened a crucial security review meeting on Thursday in Leh. The meeting aimed to address the rising tensions and establish a framework for enhanced vigilance to maintain peace.
Gupta emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “Peace and harmony are the foundation of Ladakh’s identity. Together, we must protect this legacy and ensure the safety and security of every citizen.” His call comes at a time when the region grapples with the aftermath of violence during a shutdown called by a constituent of the Leh Apex Body (LAB).
This shutdown seeks to advance talks with the Centre regarding the application of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and statehood for Ladakh. During the meeting, Gupta underscored the necessity for robust inter-agency coordination, urging members to adopt proactive measures that ensure public order and safety throughout the Union Territory (UT).
The Lieutenant Governor’s office reported that key officials attended the meeting, including Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal and Director General of Police S D Singh Jamwal, along with senior leaders from the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Gupta reiterated that the administration prioritizes the well-being of residents, directing officials to establish a consistent monitoring mechanism. He stated, “Ladakh has always been known for its peace, harmony, and brotherhood. However, certain anti-social elements are trying to disturb this atmosphere.” He urged citizens to resist such provocations and work collectively to maintain peace.
Recognizing Ladakh’s significant developmental strides since it became a Union Territory in 2019, Gupta attributed this progress to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He affirmed, “Our focus is on building a prosperous, peaceful, and developed Ladakh. No disruptive force will be allowed to derail this progress.”
Gupta also appealed to the public to refrain from violence and assured them of government support. He remarked, “Every life is precious, and we are ensuring the best possible medical care for those injured.” The LG provided a brief on the medical response to the casualties from Wednesday’s incident, detailing the treatment provided at SNM Hospital, Leh.
A total of 90 individuals received treatment following the clashes. Out of these, three were declared dead on arrival, one succumbed to injuries, seven sustained critical injuries, 20 suffered major trauma, while 61 presented with minor injuries. Gupta shared that 50 patients were discharged the same day, with seven others undergoing major surgeries and a total of 45 blood transfusions conducted.
Additionally, one critically injured patient received airlifting support to New Delhi for advanced treatment facilitated by an Indian Air Force aircraft. As of now, 18 patients remain hospitalized while 11 have been discharged today. The deceased individuals’ families received their bodies after concluding all legal proceedings.
On the LG’s directives, the Deputy Commissioner of Leh visited SNM Hospital to personally check on the injured and confirm the provision of necessary assistance to both patients and their families. “The government stands firmly with the people of Ladakh,” Gupta asserted, underlining the administration’s commitment to handle the current crisis comprehensively.
