The Congress party on Friday emphasized the urgent need for the Indian government to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh. As protests demanding statehood escalated into violence, leaving four deceased and approximately 90 injured, the opposition party called for immediate action rather than mere discussions.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced the distress of Ladakh’s citizens, lamenting that six years after the formation of the Union Territory, the initial enthusiasm has transformed into disillusionment. He highlighted that the community’s rights regarding land and employment face significant threats.
Ramesh, using the social media platform X, lamented that local governance has shifted into the hands of the Lieutenant Governor and bureaucratic authority, sidelining elected bodies. He stressed that citizens have only witnessed endless meetings aimed at their demands for constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule and an elected legislature.
The Congress leader underscored the “great uncertainty” created by China’s unilateral changes to the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, coupled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘clean chit’ to China on June 19, 2020. He stated, “Ladakh holds profound cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic importance to India,” calling for acknowledged action from the central government.
In a passionate statement, Ramesh said, “The people of Ladakh have always been proud Indians. Their distress and anguish must awaken the Government of India’s conscience—not just for more talks but for fulfilling their legitimate aspirations in FULL measure at the very earliest.”
Following the violent protests on Wednesday, which were organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) for the extension of the Sixth Schedule and the demand for Ladakh’s statehood, an uneasy calm returned to the region as curfews were strictly enforced in Leh town on Thursday. Security forces, including police and paramilitary troops, worked to maintain order as tensions remained high.
Reports indicate that authorities have detained at least 50 individuals related to the unrest, raising concerns about civil liberties in the region. Political leaders in Ladakh continue to voice their demands, seeking the provision of protections and rights that they believe have been overlooked since Ladakh’s transition to a Union Territory.
The events in Ladakh highlight the broader challenge of ensuring governance that is reflective of local aspirations while maintaining stability in a region of strategic importance to India.
