The President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Tariq Hameed Karra, has called for an impartial judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24, during which four individuals tragically lost their lives. Karra emphasized that this investigation should be overseen by a sitting High Court judge or, if unavailable, a retired judge of noted integrity.
In a press conference held on Thursday, Karra stated, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast-track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” His appeal highlights growing concerns regarding accountability in incidents of violence.
Earlier in the day, Tariq Karra paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, commending their roles in shaping India’s ethos. He pointed out that their leadership, ideology, and commitment to a self-reliant India still resonate, even recognized in platforms like the United Nations.
Discussing the political landscape, Karra addressed the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, reaffirming that decisions regarding seat sharing and alliances would be managed by the Congress leadership at the central level. He mentioned that senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has been designated as the observer for the elections, reflecting strategic planning within the party.
Responding to queries about Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra advocated for his right to attend the Assembly sessions. He asserted, “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.” This statement underscores ongoing debates around representation and legislative participation.
