Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today underscored the urgent need for collective and sustained efforts to preserve, protect, and promote tribal values that shape the identity of communities in the Pir Panjal region. Addressing the vibrant Tribal Mela held at Sagra, Mendhar (Poonch), the Minister highlighted that while development is crucial, it must not come at the expense of cultural erosion.
Rana emphasized an integrative approach that balances progress with tradition. He warned that unchecked modern influences risk diluting tribal customs and moral frameworks that are essential to community identity. The Minister assured attendees that the Omar Abdullah Government is committed to inclusive development, aiming to foster a resilient and self-reliant tribal society, firmly grounded in its traditions.
During his address, Rana praised the efforts of the Tribal Affairs Department and local administration in organizing the event, describing it as a meaningful step towards development with dignity. The Mela attracted widespread participation from locals, allowing them to celebrate their rich tribal heritage, food, and traditional wisdom.
Various stalls showcased indigenous cuisines, medicinal plants, and healthcare knowledge systems. A free medical camp also operated on-site, providing valuable consultations and services to attendees, reflecting the government’s holistic approach to community welfare.
Rana’s remarks during the Mela reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring that development policies remain rooted in lived tribal realities. By honoring and celebrating culture and heritage, the government aims to create an environment where tribal communities can thrive.
Among the distinguished guests at the event were Chairperson of the DDC Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, senior government officers, and a large gathering of locals. Their presence underscored the communal effort in promoting tribal culture while seeking sustainable development.
