India sees fresh surge in Covid-19 cases; Active tally rises to 7,121

New Delhi, June 11: India is experiencing a renewed uptick in Covid-19 cases, with 306 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the active caseload to 7,121, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released on Wednesday.

During the same period, six Covid-related deaths were recorded — three in Kerala, two in Karnataka, and one in Maharashtra. Health officials noted that one of the deceased was a 43-year-old immunocompromised male, while the others were elderly individuals with chronic and respiratory conditions, highlighting the elevated risk to vulnerable populations.

The surge is being linked to the spread of emerging variants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the newly identified NB.1.8.1 subvariant. Though these strains are still under study, early indicators suggest increased transmissibility. However, hospitalisation rates remain relatively low at present.

Kerala continues to lead in active cases, with 2,223 patients currently undergoing treatment, and accounted for over half of the new infections reported in the last 24 hours with 170 cases. Gujarat followed with 114 new infections, raising its active count to 1,223, while Delhi recorded a rise to 757 active cases.

In light of the growing numbers, health authorities and experts are urging the public to adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour such as wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded indoor spaces. They also emphasized the importance of distinguishing Covid-19 from other seasonal viral infections.
