MeT Predicts 10-Day Rain Spell Across J&K, Flood Risks

The Meteorological Department has forecast a significant wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir that will last for 10 days, beginning from August 9. The department warns residents about the risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the Jammu division, along with flash floods and landslides.

According to a statement from a MeT official, light to moderate rain along with thundershowers is expected to occur on August 7 and 8. These conditions will prevail at multiple locations throughout the Union Territory, possibly accompanied by brief intense showers in certain areas.

The weather pattern will intensify from August 9 to 11, when the department predicts a higher likelihood of substantial rainfall. Significant rainfall will particularly affect districts in the Jammu division, while brief but intense downpours may also occur in the Kashmir division.

Following this wet spell, light rain and thundershowers will continue from August 12 to 17 across various locations, with the possibility of brief heavy showers in select areas.

The Meteorological Department has issued a critical advisory for August 9 to 11, stressing the potential hazards associated with torrential rain. This could lead to life-threatening flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas, as well as waterlogging in low-lying regions.

“Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flash floods and landslides in vulnerable places and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas,” the official statement cautioned.

Officials have urged residents to exercise caution during this period. People must avoid nallahs and other landslide-prone zones that pose high risks. Authorities are also reminded to remain vigilant and implement necessary safety measures to mitigate risks associated with the expected heavy rain.

As the wet spell approaches, it is crucial that individuals prepare for the potential impact of localized flooding and disruptions to daily life. Government agencies are expected to coordinate a response to ensure public safety and maintain essential services throughout this challenging weather phase.
