The Congress party sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for failing to address the rising unemployment crisis in India. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asserted that Modi remains perpetually in election mode, devoting his time to crafting speeches rather than solving critical issues like unemployment.
Ramesh highlighted the adverse consequences of the Modi government’s 11 years of misrule, suggesting that it has affected every segment of society. In a post on X, he emphasized that all classes—including students, youth, farmers, and businessmen—experience dissatisfaction with the government’s policies.
He stated, “Inflation is skyrocketing, the value of the rupee is continuously falling, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening, making life difficult for poor and middle-class families.” Ramesh’s remarks come as the latest data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) reveals that India’s unemployment rate has surged to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest level in six months.
Job losses continue to plague multiple sectors, particularly construction and IT-banking. Ramesh disclosed that over 90 lakh jobs have vanished from the construction industry alone, with salaried jobs declining by 25 lakh.
“These alarming figures have emerged year after year,” Ramesh added, “yet the government appears unmoved. It seems Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country.” He pointedly remarked, “Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of solving the unemployment crisis.”
The Congress party has consistently condemned the ruling government’s stance on the economy. It maintains that rising prices, decreasing private investment, and stagnating wages are contributory factors aggravating the socio-economic environment for ordinary citizens. The party emphasized that the Modi government must prioritize real economic reforms and job creation instead of relying solely on propaganda and political rhetoric.
The criticism from the Congress party aligns with growing concerns among various civil society groups and economists regarding the employment landscape in India.
