In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, law enforcement agencies in Delhi have arrested 254 foreign nationals since 2024, recovering narcotics worth over ₹40.53 crore, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. This surge in arrests highlights ongoing concerns around drug abuse and trafficking within the National Capital Region.
According to the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, these arrests stem from numerous operations conducted by Delhi Police targeting illegal drug distribution networks. Reports indicate that 40 foreign nationals were apprehended in 2024, followed by 35 in 2025, and 15 during the initial months of 2026, emphasizing a steady rate of arrests.
The areas most affected include Khanpur Extension, Deoli, Sangam Vihar, Mehrauli, Hauz Rani, and Uttam Nagar in west Delhi. The profile of those arrested predominantly includes individuals of Nigerian origin who have often set up networks for drug distribution.
The substances seized during these operations range widely, including heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, gaija, and charas. Yearly seizure values reflect an alarming trend, with drugs worth ₹12.75 crore confiscated in 2024, ₹14.27 crore in 2025, and ₹13.50 crore by June 30 this year.
In a bid to improve security measures, the government reported that 103 foreign nationals were discovered living in rented homes without proper tenant verification processes. This shortcoming prompted actions against 63 landlords, emphasizing the importance of rigorous tenant checks by the Delhi Police in ensuring public safety.
In a related development, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to a “Zero Tolerance” policy against drug traffickers. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has begun utilizing an intelligence-led approach to disrupt drug trafficking networks that exploit online platforms and the darknet.
Moving forward, the NCB has engaged cyber experts to probe drug trafficking that relies on encrypted communication channels and cryptocurrency transactions. Rai stated, “The Vision Document on Narcotics Control outlines our strategy to dismantle these networks through advanced technologies and an integrated governance model.”
As part of this initiative, the government plans to establish dedicated Darknet and Cryptocurrency Cells within Anti-Narcotics Task Forces. The vision also involves utilizing AI-enabled analytics and enhancing inter-agency coordination to effectively combat organized cyber-enabled drug trafficking.
In collaboration with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the NCB has initiated specialized training programs in cyber-enabled narcotics investigations, digital forensics, and encrypted transaction monitoring, showcasing a robust international cooperative effort.
Rai’s briefing included a comprehensive three-year roadmap for the Vision Document, which advocates a holistic approach in battling drug trafficking. This plan includes strengthening financial investigations, enhancing the Narco-Coordination Centre, and promoting the 24×7 MANAS national narcotics helpline. It also emphasizes educational initiatives under the Mission Drug Free Campus.
As Delhi continues to confront the multifaceted challenges posed by drug abuse, the government’s intensified efforts aim to not only apprehend traffickers but also to foster greater community awareness and safety.
