Former President Ramnath Kovind expressed concern on Thursday that “good people” are increasingly avoiding politics. Speaking as the chief guest at the annual Vijayadashmi rally organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Reshimbagh ground in Nagpur, he urged the youth of India to actively participate in the country’s political landscape.
Kovind highlighted the influential roles of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in his life, attributing his understanding of national unity and social harmony to their teachings. He remarked, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr Ambedkar and Dr Hedgewar,” emphasizing the RSS’s commitment to inclusivity. “There is no casteism and discrimination in RSS,” he asserted, pointing towards the organization’s mission to foster a united society.
The former president elaborated on how Hedgewar’s “vichar” (thoughts) allowed him to gain profound insights into the fabric of society and the nation itself. He lamented that the reluctance of “good people” to enter politics hampers India’s democratic spirit. “I appeal to the youth to come forward and take part in this critical arena,” Kovind encouraged, recognizing that political engagement is essential for the nation’s progress.
Additionally, he announced that he is working on a new book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic,’ which reflects on the evolution and achievements of India since its independence.
The Vijayadashmi rally this year was particularly significant as it celebrated the centenary of the RSS, founded by Hedgewar on Dussehra in 1925. This milestone prompted numerous discussions around the role of the RSS in shaping contemporary India and its contributions to nation-building.
