Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old ace shooter from the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) Mhow, made headlines after clinching the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the prestigious ISSF World Championships. The championship took place at the Egypt International Olympic City Range, showcasing shooters from around the globe.
Ravinder competed against 47 top shooters in a tense atmosphere, demonstrating exceptional finesse and composure under pressure. He began with a respectable score of 93 in his first series but quickly turned the tables. With scores of 98, 94, 95, 93, and a final score of 96, he finished with a total of 569 points. This achievement placed him ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) and the Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov (556), who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
Ravinder’s victory holds significant meaning, especially since he had been away from training for over two weeks due to the birth of his daughter. Despite only managing 4–5 days of practice before the championships, his discipline, focus, and resilience culminated in what many consider a career-defining win.
Not only did Ravinder shine individually, but he also contributed to India’s performance in the team event. His outstanding performance helped the country secure a silver medal in the 50m Free Pistol team event, alongside teammates Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537). The team collectively amassed a total of 1646 points, narrowly missing the gold by just two points to South Korea.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ravinder expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support he received, declaring, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.”
