Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the recent arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, labeling the action as “unfortunate.” Taking place on September 26, Abdullah criticized the BJP-led NDA government for what he perceives as a betrayal of promises made to the people of Ladakh.

“This (Wangchuk’s arrest) is unfortunate. The way the Central government pursued him since yesterday, it seemed they would do something like this,” Abdullah stated while addressing reporters at the inaugural ceremony of the third Junior Asian Pencak Silat championship.

Wangchuk’s arrest followed violent protests in Ladakh that resulted in four deaths and over 90 injuries. Although the specific charges against him remain unclear, the Ministry of Home Affairs accused Wangchuk, a senior member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), of inciting these violent acts.

Abdullah expressed concerns over the lack of clarity from the government regarding their promises to Ladakh. He noted that prior to the Hill Council elections in Leh in 2020, a Union minister visited the region, which had decided to boycott the elections. “Promises were made to encourage participation in the elections. The people not only participated but helped the BJP win. Yet, those promises went unfulfilled,” he emphasized.

The BJP-led government had earlier committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir following the completion of assembly elections. “People here voted, expecting those promises to be fulfilled. Are they being denied statehood because they didn’t elect the BJP?” Abdullah queried. He demanded transparency from the government about the conditions behind reinstating statehood.

“If that is the case, then they should clearly state that until the BJP forms the government in J&K, statehood will not be given back,” Abdullah challenged.

In response to accusations from the Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma, that Abdullah justified the violence in Ladakh, the Chief Minister asserted that BJP representatives often shift blame onto others rather than accept accountability. Abdullah’s remarks underline a significant tension between the local populace and the Central government, particularly in relation to autonomy and statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.
