Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the potential of the youth in Jammu and Kashmir during an engagement with farmers across India in New Delhi. On the occasion of launching the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, a ₹24,000 crore initiative aimed at improving agricultural productivity, Modi confirmed that new train services significantly boost trade from the Valley.
During this pivotal event, farmers such as Fayaz Ahmad Ganaie from Ganderbal district shared their success stories. Ganaie, who once struggled, now employs 14 workers and earns around ₹15 lakh annually, attributing his success to government support. He commended PM Modi’s initiatives, stating, “I’ve come from Kashmir. I saw your progressive schemes for farmers and availed their benefits.”
Responding to Ganaie’s encouraging words, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “The youth of Jammu and Kashmir have immense strength. Now with the train services, goods have been moving fast from the Kashmir Valley.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing trade through critical infrastructural improvements.
The recent introduction of goods train services directly connecting New Delhi to Srinagar marks a transformative moment for local trade. For the first time, these services facilitate the transport of essential goods such as vehicles, apples, and various other fruits directly from the Valley.
During the discussion, Modi urged farmers to gradually transition towards natural farming. He encouraged them to experiment on small patches of land, ensuring they notice positive outcomes. Several farmers shared their experiences in adopting innovative practices after previous interactions with him.
A woman farmer praised the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, describing the annual ₹6,000 support as “a blessing” that enabled her to purchase seeds and timely prepare her fields. Other farmers displayed innovative agricultural products, including aeroponically grown “Jain potato” and value-added garlic items in paste and powder forms.
Highlighting India’s agricultural growth, Modi shared remarkable statistics that reflect an upward trend. Over the last 11 years, agricultural exports have nearly doubled while food grain production surged by 90 million metric tonnes. Additionally, fruit and vegetable production increased by 64 million metric tonnes, reinforcing India’s position as a global agricultural leader.
Furthermore, he noted that India ranks first in milk production and stands as the second-largest fish producer worldwide. Honey production has also doubled since 2014. Modi emphasized the establishment of over 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), which are key to enhancing cooperation among farmers and improving their market access.
PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana aims to empower farmers through innovation and sustainable technology, drawing inspiration from the successful Aspirational Districts Model. Modi affirmed that every farmer should benefit from inclusive growth that fosters their success and contribution to the nation.
