Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday criticized Maharashtra’s ruling parties for their failure to appoint Leaders of the Opposition (LoP) in the state legislature. He stated that this absence reflects a fear of democratic scrutiny and undermines constitutional processes.
Speaking to reporters, Raut emphasized the importance of having a Leader of Opposition in municipal corporations, state assemblies, and Parliament. “It is a democratic necessity as well as a constitutional requirement,” he asserted. Raut’s comments come amidst rising tensions over governance in Maharashtra, where the opposition has been vocal about its demands for stronger representation in the legislative process.
The Shiv Sena leader alleged that systematic efforts over the past decade have aimed to obstruct the appointment of LoPs through electoral manipulation and political pressure. “The BJP has consistently tried to weaken and insult the institution of the Leader of Opposition. Legislative business is being conducted without a LoP, which shows the ruling parties’ fear of the post,” he said.
Raut highlighted Maharashtra’s rich tradition of appointing Leaders of the Opposition, despite opposition parties having smaller numbers. “Even when the BJP did not have sufficient numbers in Parliament, it still received the LoP position. This tradition is now deliberately dismantled,” he asserted.
The opposition parties in Maharashtra have unitedly demanded the appointment of Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of the state legislature. Shiv Sena (UBT) has nominated Bhaskar Jadhav for the Legislative Assembly, while the Congress party has proposed Satej Patil for the Legislative Council.
In another significant statement, Raut criticized Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule regarding remarks about the potential creation of a separate Vidarbha state. He alleged that this proposal has the backing of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “Shiv Sena (UBT) will strongly oppose any attempt to divide Maharashtra. The state’s unity is non-negotiable,” Raut affirmed.
Raut commented on the recent debate surrounding Vande Mataram in Parliament, claiming that the ruling BJP seemed unsettled by the presence of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “There was visible enthusiasm in the debate due to the contributions of these leaders. It reinforced the belief that democracy is alive,” he remarked.
He called for a discussion on the Maharashtra Geet in the state legislature, advocating that it could spark important debates regarding the contributions of various leaders and movements to the formation of Maharashtra and Mumbai. This reflection illustrates a need for dialogues that resonate with the sentiments of the people.
