Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan has officially joined Team India ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, set to commence on August 15 in Galle. Sarfaraz steps in for Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out due to injury.
The two-match Test series marks a crucial phase for India as they continue to navigate the World Test Championship standings. Sarfaraz, excited about his return, shared a selfie in his Indian colours on Instagram, showcasing a lean physique achieved after months of dedicated fitness training.
His last appearance for India came against New Zealand in November 2024, a series that ended in disappointment with India experiencing their first home whitewash in 12 years. Earlier that same year, he made his Test debut versus England at home.
Sarfaraz was included in the squad for India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series tour to Australia in the 2024-25 season but did not get a chance to play. Over six Tests and 11 innings, he accumulated 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three fifties, with a personal best score of 150.
His recent domestic performances demonstrate his potential, having scored 429 runs in seven Ranji Trophy matches at an impressive average of 53.62. This included a century and a fifty, with a remarkable highest score of 227. Additionally, in the T20 format, Sarfaraz excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, compiling 329 runs across seven innings at an average of 65.80 and a notable strike rate of 203.09.
In the 50-over format, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he stood out with 303 runs from six matches, yielding an average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56, including one century and two fifties.
His impressive domestic record earned him a spot with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), securing a contract worth Rs 75 lakh. Though his performance was moderate with 161 runs in seven innings at an average of 23.00, Sarfaraz has shown promise, especially with a strike rate nearing 170.
Currently, Sarfaraz Khan comes into the Sri Lanka series with notable performances in the Mumbai T20 League for Aakash Tigers MWS. He scored 161 runs in five innings at an average of 32.20 and an extraordinary strike rate of 214.67, reflecting his potential impact.
As the Indian cricket team prepares for the series, it sits fifth in the World Test Championship standings with a mixed record of four wins and four losses from nine matches, holding a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
