In a significant drug bust, police apprehended three suspected drug peddlers, including a 17-year-old boy, in the Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. This operation underscores the authorities’ ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
The police arrested the teenager late Sunday evening while he rode his motorcycle from Balole Khad toward JDA Colony in the Bari Brahmana area of Samba. During a routine check, officers recovered 3.36 grams of heroin from his possession. The police spokesman confirmed that both the contraband and the motorcycle were seized.
The 17-year-old now faces serious charges under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was produced before the competent authority and subsequently sent to the Observation Home in R S Pura, Jammu. This step highlights the urgency of dealing with drug-related offenses, particularly when minors are involved.
In a related incident, the police took two additional suspects into custody in the neighbouring Kathua district. Officers arrested Pawan Dev Singh, a resident of Majalta in Udhampur, and Naresh Singh from Makwal-Ramkot in Kathua late Sunday night. They seized an impressive 23 grams of heroin from the duo during routine checks at Galak in the Billawar area. A case under the NDPS Act has also been filed against them.
These arrests come at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is grappling with rising drug addiction and trafficking challenges. Officials emphasize the need for community cooperation in addressing these issues. An increase in awareness and preventive measures could significantly reduce the spread of drugs in the area.
