Chamoli Tunnel Accident: Death Toll Rises to Nine With Recovery

GOPESHWAR/DEHRADUN: The recovery of another worker’s body in Chamoli has sadly raised the death toll from the tunnel accident to nine. The incident occurred on the evening of August 13, causing significant loss and grief among families and the community.

Officials from the Chamoli District Disaster Management Department confirmed the recovery on Tuesday, stating the efforts focused on searching for the remaining missing worker. The body was found during ongoing operations by a multi-agency team that has been tirelessly working since the accident.

Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi reported that the body has been sent to Gopeshwar District Hospital for identification. As families wait for news, the local and state authorities remain dedicated to finding answers and providing support.

The landslide-filled tunnel has become a grave site for nine workers, while one remains unaccounted for, alongside twelve others who suffered injuries due to the incident. The community mourns the tragic loss, reflecting the high risks associated with such hazardous work.

As rescue efforts continue, a joint team comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and local authorities face uphill challenges. Significant sludge inside the tunnel complicates the operation, yet teams persist in their search for the missing worker.

Authorities revealed that despite adverse conditions, search operations remain ongoing. They deploy suction pumps and other equipment to remove water and sludge, facilitating a cautious approach to rescue the last missing person.

Dheeraj Karki, the Chamoli District Information Officer, noted that three of five JCB machines trapped in the tunnel have been extracted. Their removal helps accelerate the search efforts, but the team still needs to retrieve the remaining two trapped machines.

Community members have expressed solidarity with the victims’ families, and a sense of urgency permeates the ongoing rescue efforts. As the death toll rises, officials emphasize providing support to those affected by this tragic incident.
