CM Omar Abdullah Welcomes US Ambassador, Dismisses Foreign Concerns

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, during his visit to Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday. Abdullah emphasized that governance issues in the region constitute strictly domestic matters. He stated he intends to discuss the unique circumstances of the union territory with the Ambassador.

“After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him. I would like to hear him,” Abdullah remarked, expressing his readiness for dialogue.

Setting clear boundaries for this high-profile diplomatic engagement, the CM asserted that foreign entities do not hold sway over local affairs. He stated, “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country.” Abdullah added, “Our problems will not be resolved by Washington but by our own government.” This highlights Abdullah’s stance that local issues should remain within national jurisdiction.

In addition to political matters, the Chief Minister acknowledged critical civic issues faced by residents in Srinagar, particularly the persistent problem of waterlogging. He noted, “Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue. It’s not the creation of the last two years, not even the last five years.” Abdullah stressed that the current administration is actively working to rectify long-standing gaps in the city’s infrastructure.

Addressing the infrastructural challenges, he remarked, “Neither you nor I know who gave permission to build colonies without providing drainage. Now, retrospectively, we are creating drainage in these colonies.” This statement illustrates the need for comprehensive civic planning to enhance urban living in Srinagar.

Abdullah further explained that officials have identified key problematic areas in the city. The government closely monitors weather alerts from the Met Department and organizes additional pumpage to manage flooding during heavy rains. “When we receive warnings, we arrange additional pumpage,” he stated, indicating his proactive approach to governance.

CM Omar Abdullah’s interaction with Ambassador Gor serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between local governance and the influence of foreign diplomatic relations. His candid assessment on foreign intervention underscores a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity of Jammu & Kashmir’s domestic matters. The CM’s focus remains on addressing the fundamental needs of the people while fostering international dialogue.
