In a significant announcement today, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, stated that Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) is poised to lead India’s journey toward its ambitious vision of ‘Destination 2047’. Speaking at the launch of the ATL Sarthi and Frontier Region Programme of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) at the University of Kashmir, Dr. Singh emphasized the region’s growth potential.
Dr. Singh revealed that J&K’s economy will play a crucial role as India’s economic ranking advances. He noted, “As India’s economy moves up from the 4th to the 3rd rank and beyond, Jammu & Kashmir possesses rich but underutilized resources to contribute to this growth.” The minister asserted that the underexplored Himalayan region deserves recognition, following increased attention since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration began in 2014.
Furthermore, Dr. Singh highlighted that initiatives launched by the current government, such as the Aroma Mission, have aimed to tap into J&K’s natural resources, further integrating the region into national development.
He articulated that Jammu & Kashmir has considerable potential to emerge as a leader in India’s innovation-driven growth narrative over the next two decades. “The launch of the ATL Sarthi initiative in Srinagar signifies a dual celebration—Kashmir University engaging as a key player in India’s growth and AIM expanding its innovation network to this Union Territory,” he remarked.
The Frontier Region Programme will establish 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs in J&K, the highest number among the 2,500 labs allocated for the frontier regions, driven by an investment of ₹100 crore. These labs will provide school students with cutting-edge tools in robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence, fostering an environment of innovation from a young age.
Highlighting the influence of technology on India’s economic landscape, Dr. Singh pointed out that sectors such as space and biotechnology have been vital. India’s space economy, which has dramatically risen from nearly zero to $8 billion, is set to reach $40–45 billion in the next decade. Today, more than 400 startups are flourishing in this domain.
The Minister underscored the importance of sustainable growth through public-private partnerships, stating, “We need to involve private players to sustain our growth.” He cited successful models such as InSpace in space research and BIRAC in biotechnology as examples of fruitful collaborations.
Jammu & Kashmir is increasingly recognized for initiatives like the Aroma Mission, which has spurred the growth of over 3,500 lavender startups. Dr. Singh remarked, “Many young people are returning from corporate jobs to pursue entrepreneurship in these fields, thus redefining employment opportunities beyond government jobs.”
In addition, Dr. Singh noted that J&K has shown promise in nationwide competitions, with 50 students ranking among the top 1,000 in the School Innovation Marathon. He encouraged local students and their families to dismiss myths that entrepreneurial success is reserved for metropolitan areas, emphasizing that nearly half of India’s startups originate from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
Concluding his address, he stated, “As India approaches 2047, students in these tinkering labs will be in their prime working years, positioned to be the torchbearers of a developed India.” Through their efforts, J&K will stand as a leading figure in this national journey.
The launch event attracted notable attendees, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Education Minister Sakina Masood, University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, and AIM Mission Director Dr. Deepak Bagla, reflecting broad support for these initiatives.
