Uttar Pradesh SIT Submits Report on Ayodhya Temple Donation Theft

The Home Department of the Uttar Pradesh government handed over the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) final report concerning the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft case to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Teerth Kshetra Trust on Tuesday. This step follows critical investigations into alleged financial irregularities that shocked the community and raised significant concerns.

The SIT report arrives after thorough deliberations and investigative efforts by the reconstituted team, which now includes three senior IPS officers. The Uttar Pradesh government reshaped the SIT to ensure a meticulous investigation, with IG Kiran S overseeing the probe alongside DIG Ayodhya Somen Verma and SSP Ayodhya Dr Gaurav Grover. This revamped team replaced the earlier SIT, which was composed of officials like Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar.

On the judicial front, the Supreme Court indicated that the status report submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government could not be disclosed to petitioners at this stage. However, it did allow public-spirited individuals to share suggestions regarding the investigation, which would be assessed by the Solicitor General.

The Supreme Court’s bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, directed the newly formed SIT to provide an updated status report during the next hearing. This development underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in a case that involves significant public interest.

Allegations in this multi-lakh rupee donation scam include systematic theft by temple staff and banking employees, raising alarm about the serious misappropriation of funds meant for temple offerings. This issue has cultivated political contention, with the Opposition demanding increased scrutiny and accountability from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The investigative efforts have resulted in the arrest of eight individuals linked to the case. The accused, identified as Avinash Shukla, Ankalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Rama Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava, and Rama Shankar alias Tinnu, have all been remanded to judicial custody.

The FIR was lodged on June 25 at the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station, instigated by a complaint from Krishanmohan, a trustee. The complaint outlines a conspiracy implicating temple staff responsible for counting and managing offerings, accusing them of extensive theft and misappropriation of funds.

The alleged financial irregularities have not only raised concerns but ignited a political firestorm, positioning the issue as a critical debate topic between the ruling party and the opposition. As investigations continue, pressures mount for a comprehensive analysis of accountability mechanisms in managing such charitable funds.

As this case unfolds, public interest persists in understanding the depth of the investigations and the implications for those involved. The Uttar Pradesh government’s approach and its collaborative efforts with the SIT could set a precedent for transparency in managing donations meant for religious and cultural institutions.
